Creative services for our national public broadcaster

BBC and Whitenoise

A key Whitenoise client since 2009, our first BBC commission was to develop the brand, titles, interstitial graphics and promo support around their flagship new show, 'House of the Year', hosted by Laurence Llewelyn Bowen. A fully animated 3D graphics sequence, this set a new benchmark for this type of title treatment in the local BBC supplier market and put us firmly on the map as a key supplier to BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Network.

Since then, we have gone on to deliver dozens of other film and animation graphics projects across broadcast and iPlayer, as well as traditional print, out of home and digital. Our work on Bitesize, MakeIt and online learning platforms has garnered praise and clicks in equal measure, with many of our products hitting millions of views.

Working mainly on factual and unscripted projects, the BBC rely on us to produce within their own workflows, deliver to their standards and timescales and ensure that each production has a consistent look and feel from title to credit roll, across iPlayer and other channels. In response to this we have invested in tech and developed skills and processes which allow us to deliver 'BBC standard' work that benefits all our film and animation clients.

“I regularly commission Whitenoise for TV broadcast and digital channel design and animation work. They deliver the highest quality and I find the interactions with the company – from account management to individual designers – to be first class. I trust them to deliver highly creative responses, to take feedback and provide iterative amendments and to put a customer first focus across their solutions.

By way of example; I commissioned Whitenoise to deliver a campaign for BBC election coverage in 2022. This was a short turnaround, high pressure campaign and they rose to the brief, worked at pace and delivered one of the most eye-catching and effective pieces of BBC factual work that year.

Similarly, in 2021, I commissioned them on behalf of BBC One to redesign a new brand look for a UK wide TV documentary strand. This was a multi-platform integrated brief that require careful planning and consideration of style, composition, colour matching and consistency, and again they delivered a solution that allowed us to strongly differentiate the strand from other similar content.”

Feed Yourself Fitter with Stephen Nolan

Having worked many times with Stephen Nolan, both through the BBC and his own independent production company, we were a natural fit to develop show branding and titles for his new show, 'Feed Yourself Fitter with Stephen Nolan.'

Adopting a quirky cut-up style mixing stills of Stephen and the celebrity chefs featured in each episode with cartoon character body and scene elements, the titles foreshadow Stephen's journey to kick the carbs to the kerb and embrace a healthier eating lifestyle.

"As always, Whitenoise delivered a superb result for our new show. Their levels of energy, fun and personality are off the scale and they were so easy to work with. They are my go-to production house for titles that really stand out.”
Stephen Nolan, Presenter, BBC Northern Ireland

Election Broadcast

Branding for the BBC's coverage of the Northern Ireland local elections. We proposed a rough-cut, collage style, rather than the usual film clip montage approach typically seen for this sort of project, and the end result was striking, memorable and delivered strong cut-through across all BBC's delivery channels.

This approach was more time-consuming to produce but we judged that the time investment would be worthwhile as we were convinced the end result would be very powerful - a belief that was confirmed by the client.

“This was a short turnaround, high pressure campaign and Whitenoise as always, rose to the brief, worked at pace and delivered one of our most eye-catching and effective pieces of BBC factual work that year.”

School Choir of the Year

April 2019 saw the BBC NI School Choir of the Year explode into the Ulster Hall in Belfast, with the final schools battling for the top prize. This year marked the transition of the show from radio to TV for this much-loved event, requiring some heavyweight venue branding to give the competition a warm, family-friendly feel. Applied across pull up stands, hop ups, photo props, posters and stage graphics, the Ulster Hall was adorned with themed graphics throughout to immerse guests in the School Choir of the Year experience. Additionally, Whitenoise also delivered the title sequence for TV broadcast and online as well as bespoke sound design for radio broadcast.

The event has become an annual staple since then, with our rebrand still going strong and performing, supported by incremental graphic updates to keep the event fresh and contemporary.

"Whitenoise brought our School Choir of the Year brand to life with passion, polish and pizazz in equal measure."
Carole O’Kane Series Producer, Factual BBC Northern Ireland

Each project is fascinating to work on and it is immensely rewarding to see our name on the end credits of so many high profile BBC productions.

I trust Whitenoise to deliver creative solutions with a customer-first focus. From account management to creative response, they are first class."
