The Brief

Our brief was to design an animated title sequence and a series of maps for a new RTÉ programme called 'Iarnród Enda', featuring former Taoiseach Enda Kenny on a journey across Ireland rediscovering old railway lines.

In terms of look and feel, the client wanted something that had a historical feel and featured Enda Kenny as the programme followed him on a bicycle travelling around Ireland. In addition, the animation needed to highlight the main focus of the programme being the historical railway lines and locations. 

Our Approach 

Through a collaborative process of concept development, our team developed a selection of title treatments for the programme, which were presented to Méabh and her team. Upon selection of the chosen style, the title sequence was storyboarded and illustrated in order to highlight the main features of the programme. 

Our approach utilised 2D animation and the use of parallax to give the impression of depth in each of the scenes. By using some of the initial photography taken as the programme was filmed, we were able to capture the essence of the show by showcasing the beautiful locations, and Enda himself features in the sequence.

The animated elements were produced entirely in house by our animation team, including illustration, storyboarding, animation and music and sound effects editing. We worked closely with Méabh and her team at Sonas to ensure the titles and maps reflected the mood and feeling of the programme.

Sonas Productions were delighted with the result of the project, and the six-part series aired on RTÉ in early April 2021 with over 152,000 viewing figures in the first week. This is what Director Méabh O'Hare had to say:
